The Chaotic Dynamics of the Damped, Driven Pendulum

Introduction

This web page contains information on the dynamics of a damped driven oscillator.

The information here represents a final semester project submitted as part of an undergraduate course on theoretical physics. It contains a computer program written using the FORTRAN language to plot the phase space trajectory of the above dynamical system. The program models a damped, driven oscillator using a second order non-linear differential equation. The popularity of the study of this system has been fuelled by the interest in fractals of which this system is related. This link Pend12.htm will take you to a screen shot of the computer program that generates the images. It is a DOS program and very basic compared to some the the nore modern JAVA applications around. But you should find it fun all the same! Click here to download a copy of the program PEND12.EXE

I live and work in London, UK, teaching science and Advanced Physics in a mixed 11-18 comprehensive school. I am also developing an interactive physics tutorial which can be accessed from the link below. It is not complete but please be patient.

Click this link to go to the physics tutorial and a superb interactive periodic table of the elements.
